DuoRadio Update

It has been a very hectic and interesting month. I finished classes for the semester at SMCC, flew to Seattle to see my grandparents, and then to Salt Lake City to attend orientation at the University of Utah. Since then, I’ve been job hunting and planning for the upcoming months as I move away from Maine to the Salt Lake Valley.

Hence, my ability to podcast has suffered, but never fear, I am planning on finally doing the fifth show next week. I am planning on doing the show every week on Friday night and having it published for the weekend. I’ve got some new guests lined up, and I hope that the few of you out there who have already tuned in come back. Until then, have a good week.

DuoRadio 4: The Collective Unconscience

I was once again joined by Nick Wheat for the fourth installment of DuoRadio. Topics discussed include:

How Reliable is the Internet? And are bandwidth caps and use restrictions going to work?
• The Collective Conscience. Nick never got into it especially considering he thought I said “Collective Unconscience” at first, whatever that is.
• The Pirate Bay trial, and piracy on the Internet. Don’t worry, BitTorrent isn’t going to die anytime soon.
• How cool is it that Nick can send a message to my Blackberry with his new iPod touch? It’s really awesome.•
• Nick didn’t find any of the “Hilarious Headlines” funny at all.
• I was completely unaware that women from Australia lack manners and are foul mouthed and loud.
• Kelloggs now says that eating their crummy cereal will not improve your brain function, duh.
• On a lighter note, some crazed woman is trying to sue a guest of her wedding for claiming that she slept with the groom.

Nick recommended the new Depeche Mode album which was just released yesterday called “Sounds of the Universe.” Click here to buy the album from Amazon or here to download it.

The song I played at the end of the podcast is “Screwed” by Jonathan Coulton, one of the best musicians on the net. You can get a bunch of his songs here from Amazon.

DuoRadio 3: Never Prepare

Apparently, preparing for a show is just way to beyond me. It didn’t really help that Andrew Reed bailed on me so he could play World of Warcraft like every other unemployed person on the planet. So, Nick Wheat and Ash Seeliger stepped in to discuss a slew of of topics I’ve been encountering over the last week.

We talk about Internet Trolls and why we are grateful for them, the Christian YouTuber and his issues with the internet and the world at large. We also cover how the rest of the world seems to be catching onto how useless American television news is these days.

We also discuss how those same American news outlets are absolutely head over heels obsessed with the Obamas. And speaking of the Obamas, a group of Muslims (just kidding, seriously, he’s not a Muslim) in northern India have decided that cell phone ring tones are bad for verses of the Qur’an.

P.S. I play some audio from YouTube that is really soft and difficult to hear. I’m sorry about that, it’s not my fault, the audio from YouTube was turned up all the way and I couldn’t get it to sound any better.

Subscribe to the show.

This Week’s Live Shows

This week, we will be having two live shows, one tomorrow on Tuesday, April 14th and another one on Friday, April 17th. Tomorrow’s show sees the return of both Nick Wheat (from the first show) and Andrew Reed (from the last show). And this time, I promise we will have something to actually talk about. Mostly it’s going to be things that we should have discussed last week, but were to sidetracked to ever get to.

The show on Friday will feature my friend Cassia and her brother Gideon. We will be talking about the things Cassia knows most about such as relationships in the 21st century (the non-Mormon kind) and modern social life. I’ve never talked to Gideon before beside standard pleasantries from the last and only time I met him.

So, I’ll be streaming live tomorrow night (that’s Tuesday, April 14th) at 8:00 pm on Ustream and again on Friday, April 17th at the same time and place. Hope to see some people there, such as our first official fan, “stoleyourthunder,” although I doubt it.

DuoRadio 2: Stole Your Thunder

In the second episode of DuoRadio, Andrew Reed and Wyatt Alan join me for a refined discussion about…oh, forget it, we didn’t talk about anything. In fact, posting this is a complete waste of my time and you would be wasting your time if your actually bothered downloading it and listening to it. It isn’t even worth the electrons that make up the bits on the hard drive on the server that hosts it.

We should really get our act together on this show if we ever want advertisers or listeners. I can’t even really write the show notes for the episode because I can’t recall a single darn thing that happened. I know that we talked about Facebook, a thing that I recently decided to abandon and Wyatt just hates it. We also talked about how Glenn Beck is continuing his dissent into madness and how Fox News is all about turning opinion into fact.

Let me put it this way, I am willing to take any suggestions for stories to talk about for the next one so that this doesn’t happen again. Ever. Send your suggestions along to andrew [at] duocitizenship.com. It would be greatly appreciated, and you will be credited for your contribution.

By the way, for anyone who was looking forward to the NBAN reunion we were going to be having and the return of Corey Butler to the podcast radio waves, I’m sorry. Don’t get your hopes up for it to ever happen, he clearly isn’t interested.

NBAN Reunion Live

For those of you out there (and there aren’t many of you) who remember No Bull about Noble podcast that I used to do with Corey Butler and Andrew Reed, I have good news! Corey and Andrew have both agreed to be on DuoRadio this week for a reunion, it’s been over two years since we all did a show together.

I will be streaming the show live on Ustream at 8:00 pm Eastern Standard Time on Thursday night (that’s April 9th). If anyone out there has any advice on how I can do a video chat output so that we can see Corey and Andrew while I do the show, please send me a note or comment below.

Now on iTunes

That’s right! DuoRadio is now on iTunes, the best way to subscribe to and download podcasts. Here’s the direct link to the page on the iTunes Store. Please subscribe so that I can get on the front page of the Store (bloody likely, right?). No, just subscribe and join the discussion.

Upgrading the Live Stream

The only reason I’m doing the live streaming is because I wanted to do experiments with it. I wanted to see if it would actually add any value to the content I’m creating. So far, it hasn’t, but don’t worry, it will now! I’ve been playing around with a great little free program for the Mac called CamTwist which has allowed me to do all sorts of cool things to the video output to Ustream!

The begin thing I wanted to do was to add some lower third graphics, which I did. I did some up in Photoshop based on the banners on both my DuoRadio and Duo Citizenship blogs. The next step I want to do is camera switching, but you kind of need a second camera to do that. I only have my little DV camera that I’m currently using and the built in iSight on my MacBook Pro. In my tests, I tried doing camera switching between those two, but it was delayed when I switched to the iSight because it needs to turn back on every time.

One thing I would love to do is live switching of a video chat on Skype or iChat. I would also like a way to do screencasting, so I can show viewers (how ever few of them there are) things on my screen, which would be a good way to show video chats I suppose. I’m going to write up what I’m using in the recording/live streaming set up in a separate page on this site this week.

I’ve posted the video I created using Ustream when I test all this stuff out, feel free to let me know what you think. I’m planning to be live streaming again this Thursday for the second episode of DuoRadio, but no plans are definite right now.

Podcast Difficulties

I’m currently continuing to have problems posting the audio from the first episode of DuoRadio. Apparently, GoDaddy will only allow me to host a file that is under 8 megabytes in size, which is useless when it comes to hour long audio files. I’ve contacted GoDaddy asking them about the problem, but until they get back to me, the podcast will remain unavailable.

Update: I’ve posted the audio to The Internet Archive for the time being, so it is now available, and the podcast feed is also working now.

Second Update: GoDaddy’s support worked out all of the problems and now the podcast should be working all right.

DuoRadio 1: Nick Wheat

In the first official episode of DuoRadio, I have a discussion with Nick Wheat, a college student currently going to the University of Maine in Orono. I’ve known Nick since sixth grade, and he is quite an interesting character, and always filled with wisdom as well as total bull-crap. So, it was a pretty fun show to do.

We talk about people who are “straight edge” and a swedish tobacco product called “Snus.” You can buy Snus and other fine Swedish products at Northerner.com. We also talk about conservative commentator Glenn Beck and his latest comments claiming that Barack Obama is Edward Cullen.

Speaking of Edward Cullen, we make a little fun of Twilight, both the books and the movie. We also talk about Rush Limbaugh and his plans to leave New York. We then discuss issues that rich people have with taxes and the issues involved with Republicans vs. Democrats.

Feel free to send me any story or subject ideas, or to just send your comments to andrew [at] duocitizenship.com, and follow me on Twitter at twitter.com/asdavis.
